If you didn’t already know, BGESTA is the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards.

Here are ten reasons you should totally consider entering, if you haven’t already (what are you waiting for??)

1. You can enter classes from secondary OR primary school.

If you are a primary school teacher (3rd class to 6th class) and you want to show those secondary school teachers that primary students can bring it all the way to the awards, you need to enter now and show those secondary school teachers that they ain’t all that. *Snaps fingers*

2. It’s the fourth year of the awards.

The awards are in their fourth year, and everyone knows that fourth time is the charm. If you enter this year, you are guaranteed to win!*

(*Win not guaranteed)

3. Attending the Oscar-style ceremony!

Once entered, your students are in with a chance to be invited to an ‘Oscars’-style award ceremony at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on the 17th May 2017 – an excuse to get dolled up and celebrate your hard-working class.

4. Your production could be selected to perform on stage!

Your students could be picked to perform on stage in front of everyone at the BGESTA, giving them experience in front of a much bigger audience than they might otherwise get. You could cultivate the next big theatre star by giving them the stage bug!

5. You don’t need a massive budget.

Productions of all shapes and sizes can be considered for the BGESTA, some previous nominations have had budgets of under €300. It’s not the size of your budget, it’s what you can accomplish with it.

6. You can enter in your school’s first ever production.

BGESTA accept all kinds of entries, including first-ever productions! There’s nothing stopping you!

 7. Anything from 2016 is eligible!

As long as your production occurred between January 2016 and January 2017, it’s eligible to be entered, and there’s a category for every possible type of production!

8. Amy Huberman is judging.

You might get to meet Amy Huberman. Excuse me, but you had me at Amy Huberman!!

9. It doesn’t have to be a production!

If you have some talented students who have produced some great writing that never made it to production stage, you can still enter the piece of writing to be recognised by BGESTA! Reward your most creative students by submitting their writing pieces for consideration for an award  – those talented students could be the screenwriters of tomorrow!

10. The sky is the limit!

Maybe you have a great production that you feel had some great writing, a great set and even better costumes. Well, there’s no limit to how many different categories you can enter at the BGESTA!

As long as your production entries are in by the 27th January and your written entries are in by the 10th February, you can enter as many categories as you want.

The Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards are open to primary school pupils from 3rd to 6th class and all secondary students. The shortlist of nominees will be selected and released by March, and the awards will take place at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on the 17th May 2017.

I’ll be there and I hope to see you there! If you haven’t already gotten an info pack, you can request one here and you can enter here.
